A Definitive Ranking of the Best Hot Drinks to Warm Your Soul this Winter
With the weather getting chillier, it can only mean one thing – it’s time to park your caboose on the couch with a hot cuppa and some bickies.
There’s no shortage of hot drinks to pick from when you’re walking down the aisle at Woolies, but some definitely rise above the rest.
As your resident heating experts, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to rank the most popular hot drinks. We’ve ranked them based on two incredibly scientific criteria – the flavour and their overall cosiness.
Our list caused a couple of office disputes, so sound off in the comments if you agree or disagree with our ranking. We’re more than happy to taste test more hot drinks in the name of science!
There are several drinks that didn’t quite make the list, such as hot buttered rum, but that will have to be argued about another time.
Without further ado, here is a definitive ranking of hot drinks that will warm your soul this winter.
8. Hot Milo
If we were asked if we’d rather down a hot Milo or listen to the Metropolitan drip on repeat for the rest of our lives, we’d hands down choose the latter. No sane person thinks to themselves after a long day at work that they’d just kill for a hot Milo …
This is a national disgrace on both the flavour and cosiness front. Milo is reserved for cold milk only! We will die on this hill!
Flavour: 1/5
Cosiness: 0/5
7. Warm Milk
This is a PSA to those of you who are over the age of nine and are still drinking plain milk – grow up! Don’t get us wrong, milk is a staple in most hot drinks. But this baby is a featured artist at best, not a headliner. C’mon milk, spice up your life!
Milk drinker shame is a real thing. Get outta here!!
Flavour: 0/5
Cosiness: 2/5
6. Mulled Wine
When you get mulled wine right, it can be a delicious, spicy, heart-warming drink on a chilly night. It’s the perfect addition to an evening with friends around a bonfire.
Get it wrong, and you’re drinking a bitter, tarty mess. For this reason, we’ve ranked mulled wine as a middle-of-the-road hot drink. The same goes for warmed-up apple cider, but that’s another story.
Flavour: 2/5
Cosiness: 4/5
5. Chai
Whether you’re a chai latte drinker, or you enjoy a simple tea bag, you can’t go wrong with a good chai. Sugar, spice, and everything nice – these are the ingredients that go into making a delectably delicious winter warmer.
Despite all that scrumptiousness, you won’t catch us going out of our way for a chai. As good as it is, it just doesn’t hit the same as some of these higher ranked hot bevvies.
Chai harder next time!
Flavour: 4/5
Cosiness: 3/5
4. Eggnog
Sweet, creamy, boozy goodness – what’s not to love? While eggnog is usually associated with a the winter solstice and an American Christmas, there’s no reason we can’t enjoy a good eggnog here down under in the southern hemisphere. It’s called SHARING.
You can even add some spice by stirring your eggnog with cinnamon sticks.
The novelty alone scores eggnog some extra points. Christmas party in July, anyone?
Flavour: 4/5
Cosiness: 4/5
3. Coffee
We’re in top tier territory now. Warm, frothed milk and all that caffeinated goodness, what could be better than a steaming cup of coffee?
The only problem? You either need some mad home barista skills and equipment or be willing to leave the comfort of your home to get a good brew. There’s nothing cosy about instant coffee.
Flavour: 5/5
Cosiness: 3.5/5
2. Tea
Controversial, we know, but hear us out! Something about brewing tea is inherently cosier on a chilly evening than coffee could ever hope to be. This is a beverage that soothes your soul.
There’s a tea for every mood too, and all are winter appropriate. Plus, you don’t have to worry about being up all night from the caffeine a coffee would have. It’s truly tea-riffic!
Flavour: 4/5
Cosiness: 5/5
1. Hot Choccy
The indisputable winner of our hot drinks list is, obviously, a creamy hot chocolate. Whether it’s homemade or from a legit barista, hot choccies (preferably with some whipped cream and/or marshmallows) are the GOAT of all hot drinks.
Try to change our minds, we dare you. Spoiler alert: You won’t.
Flavour: 5/5
Cosiness: 5/5
Honourable Mention: Puppuccino

While it’s neither hot, nor for human consumption, we’d be totally amiss to leave off a puppuccino from this list. Few things warm our souls more than seeing someone’s cute pup downing a cup of this wholesome treat like they haven’t been fed in two weeks.
