Signs of a Gas Leak

Natural gas is odourless. However, adding the chemical mercaptan gives it a highly recognisable rotten egg-like smell. And though the most noticeable sign of a gas leak is its smell, it's not the only indicator.

Additional signs of a natural or LP gas leak include:

  • Air bubbles in puddles above underground piping, or where water has settled on joints
  • Unexplained patches of dead grass and/or dead plants near gas lines
  • Hissing or high-pitched whistling sounds coming from gas pipelines
  • Pilot lights flickering, or not showing a strong hot blue, changing colour, or going out
  • Gas bills are significantly higher than usual
  • Members of the household are suddenly unwell (more details on gas sickness below)

It is incredibly easy for some of these indicators to fly under the radar. And that's to be expected as we rarely check puddles for bubbles.

That's why general gas appliance maintenance and servicing is essential. You can be sure everything is safe and secure with a routine service and certificate of compliance from Metropolitan Air Conditioning.

The Danger of Gas Leaks

First and foremost, gas is an incredibly safe fuel source for ducted heating, gas log fires and all other gas heaters. You should experience no trouble at all with a well-maintained heating system. However, there are some risks, and it's necessary to be aware of the dangers.

Leaking gas heaters, ovens or hot water systems can be hazardous. On one hand, there are health risks. On the other, leaking gas can pose a threat to your home and personal belongings.

In terms of physical side effects, common symptoms of gas leak exposure include:

  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Breathing issues
  • Fatigue
  • Throat and eye irritation

These symptoms often mirror those of the common cold. And that's why anyone could easily miss them and write it off as the flu. If you have a gas heater, or just a gas supply in general, remember that a leak could be the cause if symptoms persist.

Long term exposure can lead to more severe symptoms, including loss of consciousness, severe health complications, or even death.

Your home is also at risk if there is a gas leak on your property. Any exposure to a naked flame or ignition source could trigger a devastating fire or explosion. If you could prevent that with professional maintenance and repairs, what would you do?

What is the Solution to a Gas Leak?

First and foremost, you'll need to report the leak to your gas distribution network on 1800 427 532.

Once you've done that, the best way to fix a gas leak is to call your local gas fitter or gas plumber. Metropolitan Air Conditioning has fully licensed gas fitters on hand 24 hours a day.

We are available at all times so your worrying job can be looked after promptly. However, there will always be a wait time before someone arrives and the concerning leak is repaired. While you wait for Metropolitan Air Conditioning to arrive, there are several essential things you can do.

If you smell gas and determine you have a gas leak, you should:

  • Turn off the gas supply at the meter. There should be a brightly coloured handle, and you need to turn it to a right angle to the pipe;
  • Open doors and all the windows to allow as much ventilation out of the house as possible;
  • Avoid the use of any electrical appliances including powerpoints or light switches;
  • Refrain from using any fan appliances to move around the air, as they are electric;
  • Never ignite a flame;
  • Move outside once the doors and windows are open;
  • Remain outside in a well-ventilated area while you wait for your expert to arrive.

Once on-site, a thorough gas leak detection test will be performed using advanced technology and equipment. You'll then be presented with a long-term fix so you can rest assured that your gas piping and appliances are safe.

Gas Leaks FAQ

If the gas leak is located at your gas meter, or on a public space, like the street or park, you should phone the Gas Leaks and Emergency Services on 1800 GAS LEAK (1800 427 532). However, if the gas leak is located on your property – after the gas meter – then you contact a local licensed gas plumber.
Since gas is naturally odourless, a harmless chemical called mercaptan is added to give it a distinctive and recognisable smell. Widespread use of mercaptans began in 1937 following a deadly gas explosion in an American school. Carbon monoxide, however, is a by-product of burning fuels, including wood, gas and charcoal. It's the end result and therefore cannot be influenced by humans.
Exposure to a gas leak can lead to some negative health side effects. In the short term that leads to a type of gas sickness where your symptoms reflect a cold. Common symptoms include:
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Eye and throat irritation
  • Breathing concerns
Long term exposure also includes symptoms such as skin irritation or rashes, plus fainting and prolonged unconsciousness. Death can occur if gas levels are highly concentrated in a small area, especially with carbon monoxide poisoning.
